For referrers

Referrals to OrthoDocs

GPs, physiotherapists and other health professionals can refer patients for non-urgent private orthopaedic assessment in Whanganui. OrthoDocs has a main focus on lower-limb arthroplasty, including hip and knee replacement and revision surgery, and also accepts referrals for selected shoulder, elbow, hand, foot and ankle concerns. Spine conditions are not routinely assessed through OrthoDocs and are usually best directed to an appropriate spine service.

Referral checklist

Referral details do not need to be lengthy, but the most useful referrals explain the clinical question, funding context and previous treatment.

  • Reason for referral and main symptoms.
  • Relevant examination findings and duration of symptoms.
  • Current medications, allergies and relevant medical background.
  • Imaging reports or where imaging was performed.
  • ACC claim details, insurer information or self-funded status if known.
  • For revision cases, previous operation notes, implant details and prior imaging are especially helpful.

What happens after referral

The clinic team reviews the referral and may request further information before booking if it would help triage or planning. Referral does not imply surgery is required. For shoulder, elbow, hand, foot and ankle referrals, a clear working diagnosis and relevant imaging or treatment history helps confirm whether OrthoDocs is the right pathway.

Spine conditions are not routinely assessed through OrthoDocs. Patients with urgent new or worsening symptoms should be directed to their GP, urgent care, Whanganui Hospital Emergency Department, or 111 in an emergency.

What OrthoDocs may recommend after assessment

Assessment may result in advice about non-operative management, further imaging, injections, rehabilitation, monitoring, onward referral, or surgery where clinically appropriate.
