FAQ

Frequently asked questions

These answers cover common practical questions about referrals, appointments, funding and contacting OrthoDocs.

Common questions

Do I need a referral?

Appointments are usually arranged after referral so relevant information can be reviewed before you attend.

Can I book directly?

You can make a non-urgent appointment enquiry, and the clinic team will advise what is needed next.

Does OrthoDocs see urgent injuries?

No. OrthoDocs is not an urgent or emergency service.

What should I bring?

Bring medication details, imaging information, referral letters and ACC or insurance details where relevant.

Can ACC or insurance cover my appointment?

It may be possible depending on your claim or policy. Approval is not guaranteed.

What if I already have X-rays or scans?

Please tell the clinic where and when imaging was performed so reports or images can be requested if needed.

What happens after the appointment?

Mr Thompson will explain what may be causing symptoms and what options make sense. This may include non-operative management, further investigation, monitoring, onward referral or surgery where clinically appropriate.

Can I send clinical documents through the website?

Do not upload or send detailed clinical history through the public form. The clinic will advise how information should be provided if needed.

Where is OrthoDocs located?

OrthoDocs is at 37 Dublin Street, Whanganui.

Who do I contact if symptoms are urgent?

For emergencies call 111. For urgent new or worsening symptoms contact your GP, urgent care or Whanganui Hospital Emergency Department.

Practice scope and treatment decisions

Does OrthoDocs see all orthopaedic conditions?

OrthoDocs has a main focus on hip and knee arthritis, joint replacement and revision arthroplasty, but referrals are also accepted for selected shoulder, elbow, hand, foot and ankle conditions. Spine conditions are not routinely assessed and are usually best directed to an appropriate spine service.

Does seeing an orthopaedic surgeon mean I need surgery?

No. Surgery is not always the first step. Many orthopaedic conditions can be managed without surgery, depending on the diagnosis, symptoms, imaging findings, general health and goals. An appointment may help clarify the diagnosis, review non-operative options and decide whether surgery is appropriate.

Does OrthoDocs assess spine conditions?

Spine conditions are not routinely assessed through OrthoDocs. Patients with suspected spinal conditions are usually best referred to an appropriate spine service.
